This week on the GCN Show, we dive into the “prohibitive” cost of cycling and investigate if the sport is actually cheaper than ever thanks to a booming second-hand market. We also explore a bizarre new scientific study suggesting that training in a hot tub could significantly boost your FTP. Plus, Dan recounts the moment he was overtaken by a World Champion while riding flat-out, and we take a look at Shimano’s latest “self-tightening” shoe patent.

  1. We found some incredible bargains on the second-hand market this week—but we want to know, would you ever buy used bib shorts, or is that a bridge too far? Let us know your best-ever cycling bargain in the comments! 👇

  2. Former mechanic who stopped riding for 10 years here: just built myself a 2008 Serotta with full 6700 and it cost me about $1000 US. I’m delighted by the value for money…

  3. It is highly unlikely that the average cycling enthusiast will ride any faster or slower, corner better, climb better, descend better, on any new bike compared to of those used bikes (or frankly the bike he/she already has). A pro? Maybe. A Joe? No. NEVER buy expensive bikes unless you just want to show off.

  4. At the risk of sounding like 'that old guy,' in 1970, the top production bike in the US was the Schwinn Paramount, a hand-made, Reynolds 531 frame with the top Campagnolo group and tubular tires. With the optional Campagnolo brakes, the bike was $330 US. Adjusted for inflation, that would be $2840 US today, yet this bike was the equal in performance to any bike you could buy in 1970, regardless of where it was made. Adjusting the cost of the Canyon mentioned to US dollars and adjusting back for inflation, we find it would have cost $157 US. Looking through that same 1970 Schwinn catalog we find the Super Sport, a hand fillet-brazed, chrome moly frame with fairly decent components for the day (with the exception of the crank and kickstand) at $125. The difference doesn't sound like much, but it's 20% of the total cost of the Canyon. So, no, current bike pricing is not the lowest it's ever been and, if you're talking about the top end, it's not even remotely close.

  5. I started my cycling journey on Amazon bib shorts. After an hour of riding, it felt like someone was taking a razer to me down there. I gave NeoPro a shot for their prices and… it was night and day. It's not as "nice" as my more expensive bibs I have now, but since it was cheaper I put it through the paces and it's held up pretty well. It's not as "premium" feeling as other brands, but it's 90% of the way there and good enough for your daily riders. It's kit designed by people who ride bikes.

  6. Basically any bike with R7000 or newer / better. Is pretty much 90% of the performance of any of us could ever need. I bought a cervelo R3 with Ultegra 6700 for $800 NZD, around £350 in the kings money.

  7. Fun, I bought my first "bike shop bike" in 1973 for $205 a Motobecane, Grand Jubilee Derailleurs, Reynolds 531 main tubes and fork, alloy rims — Today that money with inflation (according to the US CPI Inflation calculator – take that with a grain of salt) would be the same as $1565 So not only been so cheap but way better !

  8. In 2014, Jens Stötzner, Aron Faas, Sven Jessl, Alexander Strasser had a bicycle race actually completely under water with scuba gear and got listed at Guinness

  9. I have a 2015 Masi Evoluzione carbon 105 (rim brakes). Easy to work on although it only goes to a 28 tooth on the cassette. But, I just picked up a 10-34 cassette and will get a new derailluer for $30 to $50 bucks. I also bought a mountain bike (2021 Santa Cruz, High Tower Carbon V2) for 1/7th the price it was brand new. The only bikes Ill be purchasing new is if I win the lottery. How about the turbo trainer in a hot shower, lol. 17 of us at the end now

  10. Specialized also was taking NeilPryde to court for NeilPryde using the name Alize saying it was too close to Allez. Although having completely different meanings. NeilPryde changed their Alize to Nazare.

  11. This motor doping requires a custom fork / wheel to minimize the gap as magnetic force drops by a cube of the distance. Look at the arrangement for a standard fork and you'll see the gap is way too big to work

  12. I think an important factor which I have noticed with high end gear is durability. Not only in cycling, but I have found the same to be true of kit for outdoor travel such as backpacking and sea kayaking. While maybe having similar comfort levels, I have had cheap gear fail on me at inopportune times, which can be dangerous, and many high-end brands include extended or even lifetime warranties (I am a life-long loyalist to Patagonia, and because of this a large investment upfront has enabled me to never as of yet repeat the purchase of a piece of gear as they will always repair or replace). I enjoy ultra-endurance, and so much time in the saddle or carrying a pack has cemented my belief that an investment in high end gear up-front leads to savings in the end. Thanks guys! Love all your videos!! Especially the last 15 mins 😉

  13. 15:30 I totally agree with your analogy to cars, but when you don't know, you don't spend this much in thing that you are not even able to fit to you needs, unless you wanna look like a rich idiot !
14:59 But that is "absolutely fine" as long as you sale it to me 5 years later 20% of the price ! 😆

  14. I would love to find an all-road bike under 7kgs that would support my great weight of 100kgs! Anyone know of any frame brands made out of adamantium, vibranium or unobtanium…? 🤣

  15. “…has never been so cheap”?!
Yeah—about as “cheap” as the way they’re buying us on social media.
2026: the year of the “white Canyons” and “white Rose” on Instagram, the year of “not-normal SYNdicates” and this whole exploding marketing circus. You just get tired of it. The technical term is: marketing fatigue

  16. Las bike I bought (Specialized Roubaix), I went for the "entry" level with 105 mechanical. Then upgraded the wheels with a pair of Roval carbon on sale. I get the same frame than the +8000 euros models, great wheels… will upgrade the handle bar someday maybe.

  17. Costs are relative to income and desire. $1500 CAD is my absolute max for a bike. All but 1 of my.bokes have been bought used.

And yes Nepro Cycling is a great option for entry level cyclists or those on a budget. I have no qualms buying gently used bibs because I would wash them thoroughly before wearing them. And most of my shoes have all been gently used as I can try out different brands without spending a fortune. Keeps stuff out of the landfill a d gives you an opportunity to try a product before fully committing.

  18. Have gear for almost all wallet's, the problem is with outdated/old gear you cannot show of Saturday morning. This is the problem. I never see a road cyclist in the middle of nowhere with the last fashion clothes, the last fashion bike….
On the another side you see a complete weekend show off close to the major cities in Europe. This people do not imagine the ridiculous figure. Each one have the right and duty to live.😅

  19. 40:32 "So many people would have to involved in that"…
    Nono: only Istvan Varjas…
And of course they bought him near exclusivity, which defeats your second argument too ! 43:23
The Tour has recently been full of suspicious wins, easily explainable that way ! wonder why it doesn't come up more
