Hi all! Just wanted some help before I purchased my new gravel bike. Essentially I’m torn between the canyon Grizl cf6 and the Kona Ouroboros Cr/Dl. My riding will most likely consist of 60% trail and 40% road. I couldn’t find many reviews on the Kona, so if anyone has experience or some knowledge on it I would love to hear it!

Here are the links for each:

  1. It looks like both are direct/delivery so you better be pretty self-sufficient for maintenance. But that notwithstanding, the main differences I noticed are…

    1. the geometry. You need to do a deep dive and see which is more your style. At first glance, the Canyon appears to have a more aggressive one, and the Kona more relaxed.

    2. 1x (Canyon) vs. 2x (Kona). I prefer 1x to avoid chainring shifting, but the Kona 2x gives a slightly lower climbing ratio at its max (40/44 vs. 30/36) and a slightly higher speed gear as well

    3. The Kona has Etap (electronic, wireless), and Canyon has XPLR (cabled)

I would go through those, do a yea or nay, then decide. They’re very comparable and both decent brands. It’s just that your LBS may be reluctant to work on them, maybe. I know in my area that my LBS is very busy and only works on stuff they sold.

  2. FroggingMadness on

Two pretty different bikes in my eyes just on account of geometry. The Canyon will put you into a sportier body position and also handle more directly, and it’s probably a bit more lightweight and not quite as overbuilt. Whether you call such a bike reponsive or nervous is up to your personal preferences, as is your body position. I’d look at the Kona as a bikepacking tourer with drop bars and the Canyon as a road bike with attachment points and big tires. I’d also rather see a wireless 2x groupset on the Canyon and a wired 1x on the Kona, but to the contrary it’s the other way around for some reason.

  3. Kona is basically a mtb if you look at the geometry.
I think that’s just to much for gravel. You will lose all the playfulness that makes gravel fun!
    So go with the canyon!
