Are there any bikes currently or recently being made that you look at in awe but can't afford or justify right now? Which bikes would you be looking for to buy cheap in 10-15 years when they're at the bottom of the depreciation curve?
For me it's the 2021-2024 Specialized Chisel in that gorgeous red that fades to dark red. It's not that they're crazy expensive, starting at €800 used already, but I can't justify spending that much money on a mountain bike when I barely have any mountain biking opportunities at the moment.

To tell you the truth, probably not many?
So many proprietary parts, electric this, internal that.
Sure. Who knows if I’ll still be able to ride a drop bar bike comfortably when I’m 45 (10 years from now), but those Fair lights, Crusts, Genesis’ and so on do look super tasty, but I’m not going to pay 2k+ for a bike.
Maybe some of those steel bikes, Stooge, Crust etc. Frames.
I think there will be a slew of ok to good aluminium gravel bikes that will be really great as big tire clearance/endurance road bikes, whereas I think modern gravel will continue grow more towards wider tire clearance, aging out older models.
I also think that they probably won’t be as cheap as one hopes, as stuff with more technology (e.g. Droppers and suspension) tend to age worse and depreciate more quickly then their non suspended and hydraulic counterparts.
Anything from Fairlight. Also some Crust, Genesis and All City models.
And maybe even that Specialized Chisel actually. I had one for a couple of years and I loved it. It felt so fast and effortless to ride.
Marin come up with nice color fades occasionally like that Four Corners Elite from a couple years ago with the screaming red yellow green scheme.
Steel frames from niche or low volume builders. And higher volume stuff like Surly… Imagine coming up on a Moonlander at the back of a garage or some other cool frame that they might have stopped making by the time you find them.
I already have it, Handsome Bikes XOXO, their homage to Bridgestone XO1. I don’t think they made many frames but if you see one take it, it’s perfect.
Steel hardtails from Brit brands like Cotic or Stanton, bikes from Fairlight or Tour Terrain, maybe a Specialized P4, and good bikepacking / touring capable hardtails with Pinions.
Oh wait that’s what I am already generally keeping eyes open for 🤡
Let’s not start scalping bikes please
Kona sutra ltd, Kona unit x
I still want a VSF Randonneur with discs. I do not need that bike, but I think it’s neat.
Steel hardtails. Surlys, somas, Konas… already have a five year old karate monkey and 15 year old soma b side.
I’m gonna be picking up Specialized Rolls soon as they get under $150 used. 650b disc wheels on the exact kind of bike that gets used twice a summer then sold once it needs any maintenance is a sweet cheap commuter wheelset waiting to happen.
Soma and Velo Orange are making wonderful frames right now. Maybe in 10-15 years I’ll finally be ready for disc brakes.
