Hi everyone,

I'm currently looking for a new saddle for my gravel bike, which I am gearing up to use for long bikepacking trips.

Recently, I've been spending quite a bit of time on my indoor trainer, and I've started experiencing significant pain and chafing right at the gluteal fold. I've attached a quick graphic to show exactly where the hotspots are.

I'm currently using a WTB Gravelier (140mm width). I actually get the impression that my upper back thighs are much redder and more irritated after a ride than my glutes themselves. It feels like the edges of my current saddle are digging directly into that specific area.

Has anyone experienced pain in this exact spot? I would love to hear your recommendations for saddles that are comfortable for long gravel/bikepacking days and might alleviate this issue. Also, if you suspect this might be related to my bike fit (saddle too high, too far back, tilt, etc.), any advice on adjustments would be hugely appreciated!

Thanks in advance for your help!

  1. One thing to note is that its always worse on the trainer because you are seated the whole time, when you ride outdoors, you move around a lot more and don’t tend to develop hot spots, ot at least, not in the same places. I wouldn’t switch or buy a saddle for outdoor riding based on my experiences on a trainer.

That being said, I got a Brooks B17 a few years ago and its the most comfortable saddle I’ve ever had. Right from day one as well. Didn’t even need to break it in like some people say you do.

  2. There are dozens of potential factors here. You are correct in mentioning bike fit and saddle height as possible factors. The only realistic way to address all of these is with a lot of trial and error or a bike fit. I’d recommend a bike fit.
