  1. shimano tells you turn it on when you’re riding, set it and forget it.

enjoy the features that come with your bike that make it more enjoyable and pleasant, no need to baby it even for the possibility of small gains in increase durability or lifespan.

instead you should be mindful of maintenance and other intervals to keep your bike in top shape.

I suspect there is a marginal increase in wear, but the more noticeable impact is that there is increased resistance when rear suspension needs to compress. In theory it negatively affects suppleness and small bump compliance of the suspension. I personally would prefer a quieter ride

  3. I think the increasing the tension may affect shifting performance more than any wear. I would adjust with just enough tension to keep things quiet.

  4. I’m sure it should be fine, but don’t forget your clutch maintenance. There’s a special Shimano grease and procedures you should follow. The clutch is a fairly common thing to neglect.

  5. you should service these mechs regularly, the seal of the pulley cage pivot is non existent and it starts to squeak regardless of the clutch mode.

apply amount of tension whatever you like, bu at some point, shifting quality will deteriorate if is too stiff.
the clutch acts as a damper, you really dont need to crank it too much

It probably will wear it a bit more. What I tend to do is just turn it on for the chunky stuff. Most of my trails are climb, then downhill so it works well in that type of scenario. I find the clutch to affect the shifting a little so my preference is to have it off unless the bike is going thru a lot of rough terrain.

  7. I’ve found I can wear through rear gear cables faster with a high clutch setting. That was on an older 11s system though

Pro-tip for you SLX users out there. The adjustment screw is in the _exact same spot_ you just can’t access it because you only get the “premium adjustment hole” on XT. But if you’re like me, and you broke your XT derailleur and didn’t feel like shelling out the cash for a new one, you can upgrade your SLX by swapping the clutch cover. It’s literally the exact same mechanism.

Clutch tension is important but it is also in need of maintenance. You can recalibrate the clutch spring. FYI, Shimano is eliminating clutch features going forward in favor of a stiffer main spring.

If you find you need to increase clutch friction to prevent chain slap, the clutch likely needs servicing.
