I’ve been battling horrible SAD (seasonal depression) for at least 15 years. This is the first year I’m having absolute no symptoms, and I think it’s thanks to switching to cycling everywhere.
Still absolutely sucks to cycle at 5am in Red Alert storms because my crappy job won't let me swap shifts, but you know what? Anytime I manage a hellish commute like that, I feel like a superhero. 😂
Two years ago, I had terrible SAD and I developed a coat obsession – dressing appropriately for shit weather brings me so much joy – cycling in full waterproofs in torrential rain and not getting wet is so fun!

Being outside and exercising a lot can help a lot.

When the drivers are looking at you with that ‘what the hell is wrong with you, why are you riding in this weather?!’ face, you know you’re doing it right.
Good on you. There’s no doubt in my mind that cycling regularly has a major impact on my mood.

I’ve been wimping out all winter and driving, only riding bike for fun on the weekends. Told myself that no matter what, I was going to ride this week because I had no excuses on the calendar that necessitated driving a car.
So I’ve been riding in 40+ mph winds and a blizzard warning, grinning the whole way.

I’m glad it has done you some good! I always feel good about cycling too. It’s like a time to meditate almost. Be one with nature! Kinda random, but one thing I’ve noticed is like when people say “Suddenly it’s spring, it was winter just last week!” (And summer to fall), but as a bicycle commuter I notice the gradual change of temperatures better.

Yay! And yeah, when I started walking the dogs every morning and cycling to work it really helped! Keep it up!
