Title says it all, the top C clip seems to snap on my every time after a couple thousand miles.. ive been riding in the rain / post snow so they look a little beat up, but why would the metal snap in the same place on both? What am i doing wrong in set up

If you consistently ride in those conditions speedplay may not be the right system for you. That C clip is a tiny piece of metal and it doesn’t take much rust and corrosion to compromise it.
You could try lubricating things more frequently or make a point of drying things out quickly after a ride but I’d recommend just going to spd/spd-sl for wetter conditions.
Maybe it’s due to riding with speedplay clips for a couple thousand miles? Don’t get me wrong, a system the works for you is the best/right system to use. What i mean is speedplay was a bit of a delicate system to begin with, before wahoo acquired them. The cleats are superduper not walkable because they contain the clamping mechanism. I would recommend avoiding touching the ground with your cleats as little as possible (and yes i realize how ridiculous that sounds). That, or convert to something else like time/spd/crankbrothers.
Are you installing them with a torque screwdriver?
If not, that’s the problem…
My current Speedplay cleats are still in good shape after 7500 miles.
1. I disassemble, clean, and grease all the parts of my cleats twice a year; I bike about 3000 miles a year. I don’t live in a snowy area, so YMMV.
2. After coming back from a wet or muddy ride, I spray my cleats (and chains) down with compressed air and give them a superficial wipe down – this prevents rust.
3. I replace the cleat covers when they get worn down from walking. They’re $30/pair MSRP, so pretty cheap compared to the pedals’ full price. I don’t walk on the metal parts if I can help it.
Do you torque them down correctly? They are prone to breaking if you overtighten.
