My boyfriend and I are considering a 4 or 5 day trip during the solar eclipse this summer (mid-August) in Spain, but we can’t decide between Asturias and Rioja. We’re planning to rent gravel bikes and are comfortable on paved and fire roads but not aggressive single track.
Some routes we’re considering:
Asturias: https://bikepacking.com/routes/la-huella-del-oso/
La Rioja: https://bikepacking.com/plog/bikepacking-the-rioja-alta-loop/
What we’re looking for:
– Views
– Good food
– 30-60 miles per day max depending on elevation
– open to tent camping or Refugios/hostels or a mix of both
Questions we have:
– We’re from California and have backpacked all over the state, which is more unique?
– Which is more difficult?
– Which has better food?
– Which has better weather in August?
– What other trade offs are we not considering?
