I just got a flat tire and found this on the inside of the inner tube against one of the holes in the wheel rut — does this mean I inflated the tire too much? Or is the fact that there is a hole in this film thing mean I need a new wheel? I noticed the dimples there too, made me think I over-inflated. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

  1. That “film thing” is your rim strip. Those can be changed super easily and for super cheap, bike shops charge around 5 bucks or so for one. Sometimes those strips can be weak, and if you put too much air in the tire, it can poke through like that. I’d look into a higher quality rim strip because sometimes on those double wall rims, ones that have visible holes in them, rubber can poke through.

Like everyone said change out and put in a decent rim tape. Any quality tape will handle what the max tire pressure is as listed on your tire. And you don’t necessarily have to pump it up to that. In addition between the tube and tire you can also install anti-puncture tire liner tape to lower the chance of getting a flat.
