My last kickstand post was removed by moderators. See if this one sticks.
I like my rear mount Greenfield Kickstand, and I like riding my ancient Rivendell Atlantis hard off road. (It’s also been my ‘car’ for well over a decade, so a daily kickstand is an absolute necessity)..
The kickstand bounces down and rattles off road, so I used a tie-on Voile strap to hold it in place for decades. It was annoying. I took it off as soon as I hit pavement, as with it flopping around, it could go into the spokes.
I finally cleaned up my act and made this setup recently. I cut off the hook on a Voile strap and ‘permanently’ mounted the buckle to my Tubus Ti rack with an aluminum bolt and polished sleeved axle, made from a steel cable ferrule, lubed with silicone. Storage is on the front copper hook for town use.
The last photo shows my ‘Sand & Snow Foot’, I made from carbon fiber and Kydex. It slips onto the stock rubber foot like a heel less slipper and held on with a metal spring inside parachute cord (prevents cheatgrass from plugging up the spring) that attaches to another small copper hook under the twine wrap (not shown). Every movement of the slipper makes it pull on. It can’t fall off. I’ve been using this foot for around twenty years, mostly for snow. It has been a tremendous help when shedding or fetching layers and gloves in the winter.
This new strap set-up makes me way too happy. My Atlantis build is finally ‘finished’ after 28 years… The last little touch.
I’ve moved onto light carbon rack-less bikes for bikepacking in summer, but for the enormous bulk of winter gear, panniers are easier to live with.
