For whom it may concern:
If you're struggling for more than an hour (just like I did right now) pumping brake fluid into the system just for it to overflow and the brakes still feel spongey, REMEMBER TO BURP YOUR LEVERS.
You do that by loosening the stem and slowly rocking the handlebars forward and backward. That allows the fluid to flow through the channels inside the levers. That should solve the sponginess. If not, you probably still have some air bubbles in your system. Check if the brake line points upward all the way from the bottom, no "valleys" in which the air can become trapped.
I watched about 5 different videos on how to bleed road bike brakes and only in the last one (by Park Tool) did they mention this critical point of the process.
Godspeed everyone. And make sure to properly service your bikes before riding this season, for your own safety. Cheers!

I hear that using a vibrating massage gun is also a good way of accelerating the burping.
