Joined the sub a week or two ago and here we are. Visited a local community run bike shop this morning and found this in the back. They were having issues tuning the front derailer and gave a deal on it for the frame. Has a mismatched set of wheels, but I think good bones for my first build. Thinking a 1x conversion but have to do some learning and probably tool up to do that.

People love to 1x these bikes, but there’s not really any benefit to doing so. 1x came about to help get short chainstays and fat tires to play nice together. These 90s bikes have neither.
I mean… it’s your money, but I’d keep the XT group together as is
That frame is legendary cool. Love it!
The repair to the rear derailleur hanger looks a bit “DIY” and is likely weaker than the OG hanger… maybe consider going single speed or update to an IGH if that ever fails. An Alfine on the rear would be pretty cool, just saying.
