Chalke and Cheese is a 200km Audax cycle ride that happens every January from near Bristol. This film about the ride has been made by award-winning photographer and film maker Fergus Coyle as part of a long term project to capture the essence of audaxing; with its ethos on community and self reliance.
His film shows riders starting out from Warmley Station along the Bristol to Bath Railway Path and through the Two Tunnels under Combe Down, into Wiltshire and down the Wylye Valley to Ginny’s, then to Wilton.
It then head over to the Chalke Valley, and after a couple of iconic climbs, Shaftesbury.
The return leg via Wells takes in Cheddar Gorge dropping down The Mendips to the Chew Valley and the finish at Bridgeyate.
The event was one of the Great Western Randonees – full details here https://pedalution.co.uk/events/chalke-cheese-200/.

  1. That’s brought it all back. My first ever winter 200km and extensive night riding back in 2019. It was so hard but the Ginnys (cafe) welcome. I got round and somehow continued for 12 months to my first RRtY. A brilliant piece of filmmaking and loved the atmospheric drumming.

I still can’t work out why there are no AAA points!! An audax classic captured beautifully.

  2. This really captures the atmosphere of a winter calendar event. The dark start, frost warning, long shadows, friendly chatter at the controls, Grandpa Pom checking everyone's history homework and plenty of grinding up steep hills! Stunning shots of Cheddar too!

  3. I think the first rendition of C&C (AFAIK) was my first 200. I’ll need to fact check that. Cleverly chosen and layered music and interviews Fergus.⁩ I enjoyed working out whose voices belonged to who.
