My Trek Domane circa 2016 has a fork conversion kit installed allowing my to use 12mm thru-axle wheels (fork comes stock with 15mm thru axles). I have had it installed for around 5 years with no issues.

I want to change over the tyres but the thru axle is refusing to come out. The axle rotates fine but it starts pushing the fork apart from the threaded end on the caliper side rather than coming out from the other side. It appears that either the sleeve and thru-axle have seized, or that sleeve and fork mount have seized and/or both.

I have written to both the place of purchase and another seller. The other seller has been helpful and suggested:

– Soak the head of the thru-axle in penetrating oil.

– Tap/hit with rubber mallet on axle head to help dislodge

– (last resort) cut head off thru-axle

I have done the first two to no avail. Before I proceed cutting, any further advice?

Penetrating oil works best if you tap the affected area with a hammer to open up microscopic gaps for the oil to get in. Also heat within reason. It can take overnight soaks for it to work.
