What’s the ultimate zero-emission cycling weekender in the UK?
This trip was all about finding a scenic, sustainable cycling destination that’s easy to reach, great to ride, and genuinely fun to do with mates. The answer? The Isle of Wight.
We loaded up four people and four bikes into an all-electric Volkswagen ID. Buzz (no roof rack needed), drove down to Portsmouth, and hopped on the 45-minute ferry over to Fishbourne. From there, it was time to ride.
Across the weekend we clocked just over 70 miles (around 100 km) of cycling, taking in coastal roads, rolling climbs, and a few “character-building” headwinds. Not quite the calm conditions Jay was hoping for… but that’s all part of the adventure.
The island surprised us in all the best ways — brilliant routes, great food, solid places to stay, and a properly green, relaxed vibe that makes it ideal for a short cycling escape.
If you’re looking for a low-carbon cycling trip that feels like a proper getaway without flying halfway across Europe, this one’s well worth adding to your list.
