I’m undergoing the process of converting this 199X Giant Iguana to 1×10. I’ve already purchased a deore m4100 (46T) cassette. In order to have a decent ish ability to climb/pedal around town (mix of rather steep hills and also lots of flat areas) I’ve settled on a 40T chainring, however shimano only seems to offer the deore m5100 crankset in 30 or 32T.
According to shimano website this crankset has a 96 BCD, so my question is, could I just buy a generic 40T chainring and install it? I tried zooming in on the stock photos of the crankset but can’t determine if it is hollow riveted on or uses bolts. Thanks!
EDIT: I should be clear to use HT2 cranks on this frame so lone as I get a 68/73 Bottom bracket correct?

Based on my understanding, the shimano crankset you listed is not riveted and anything asymmetircal with the proper BCD can be swapped onto the crank. Wolftooth makes a bunch of these, with offset and without- depending on how your chainline ends up.
You could also look into a cues crankset if you want more teeth but still narrow wide and hollowtech.
You can put any crankset you want on there – there’s no reason to use a shimano one in particular. If you want to play around with different chainrings my suggestion would be to get one that uses the sram 3 bolt standard which gets you the widest range of original and aftermarket chainrings, makes them easy to swap – and quite importantly it also gives you a range of offsets to insure proper chainline.
If you do go with the m5100 crankset then you need the shimano specific non-symetric 96 standard chainring. You also want to make sure that the 40t won’t interfere with the chainstays.
Finally, unless you are pretty fit, a 40×46 may be a bit much for a rather steep hill, even on a 26 inch tire.
