Short summary of my experience bikepacking the Granguanche Trail route:
- The varying landscapes are phenomenal: from black volcanic rockland to pineforests to sandy dunes to rainforest and back.
- The hike-a-bikes are frequent and demanding. Almost all extra unpaved parts compared to the Gravel route contain HAB sections.
- Some sections are remote, without cellular reception. I rode solo, but in hindsight this was perhaps not so wise.
- Sometimes you have to think ahead a bit, but generally resupply is easy. Prices are low compared to northwestern Europe.
- Check the ferries beforehand: not all of them take bicycles on board.
- I rode a hardtail mountainbike, which I think is the best choice for this route.
In general I’d really recommend going, but a next time I think I’d opt for the gravel route.
