I’m overhauling these 70’s era MKS pedals. Do the cup and cone bearings take a preload or zero play? TIA

You can unturn the cap at the end. Below there is a cup and cone style of adjustments. Zero Play should be it. Although depending on your use you can leave the slightest amount of play

there doesn’t need to be any play as long as the races and bearings are in good shape. these adjustments are tricky and can take a lot of attempts. it definitely helps to put the pedal spindle in a bench vise sticking straight up.
