I recently acquired this wheel without realizing it was in such bad condition. It's supposedly a Specialized from the late 90s. The tube is completely wrecked, it appears to have been repaired near the hub, its spins lightly but slowly gets like stuck and instantly stops like something Is a little too hard, and the brake track is slightly dented. Is there any way to salvage it and make it usable for leisure riding? I would like to read some opinions

  1. I’d chalk this up to a bad purchase and set aside. Not worth the risk to me of replacing the tubular tire and hoping the repair done on the wheel is good enough.

these can handle a surprising amount of abuse, and I would probably just tape on a cheap Vittoria but ride at your own risk obviously.

The big issue I’m hearing is the spinning thing. It sounds to me like the hub needs adjustment, it’s too tight and it binds. I think it’s old enough that you should be able to grab a set of cone wrenches and adjust it. I’m not sure if I personally would worry about a small dent in the brake track if I was going to ride it brakeless. I also personally don’t have a problem with a quality carbon repair.
It sounds like from another comment that this might be a tubular model….if the tire is toast, just roll it off, clean the old glue off, and put a new tire on, it’s not as hard as people believe it’s just a pain in the ass and you have to let the cement dry. You can get a tire for like 50, and even the cheap ones ride ok
