Hello lovely lovelies ! Third attempt on the upload bloody hell.
I would really appreciate some help getting a wide range 94/58bcd crankset on my rockhopper.
For the last year or so I have been running 1x, but I have succumbed to the call of the front derailleur… I have a set of 94/58 BCD deore lx fc m563 cranks that have a petite 22t inner ring, I would like to pair that with a 38t in the middle and limit the front derailleur from moving past that.
94 BCD rings aren't the easiest to find these days, I blew the bank and brought a lovely new TA one. Tried to install this evening but found that the chain rubbed in between the middle and inner ( It was installed in the middle position on the spider despite what the photo shows). Is this chainring simply going to be incompatible ?
I would love any guidance on how to get this set up working, if it works I really think it would be the best possible gearing for my use case 🙂

This BCD setup was created for the ‘compact’ MTB cranksets starting with 1994, as I recall, with typical cranksets being 22-32-44 on higher end and 24-34-42 on lower end bikes.
The jump between 22 and 38 is just probably too big for the derailleur cage to work properly. The original cranksets had around 40-45% jump from small to middle, and yours is over 72%. Not sure if there’s anything you can do to improve that.
Could try using chainring spacers to move the 22t inward a smidge. (Open up the chain gap, between the rings). Spacers can come in a couple different depths.Â
I run a 42t TA Zephyr with a Middleburn 22t. 10sp chain.
