Occasionally I’ll get passed by someone who I can tell is sucking a lot of air. When that happens I try to guess what side street they are going to pull off on so they can rest.

I hate those type of ditches. If I go in them, I will hurt a lot, and if a motorbike or car goes in them, there is no predicting which direction they will go from there after impact.
I was riding this exact bike, value 35 euros. Here I was on the 150 km route

My strategy for hills (before I got an e-bike) was to hope someone in front of me would get up the hill, proving it was possible for me! It worked a few times, but I don’t pass many cyclists on my commute.

Just hang onto the back wheel. I find that at first it upsets them. But soon, you get some begrudging respect
