This photo was taken near Annecy, France, on a former railway line that’s now a bike path. Super smooth, steady, and just easy riding. Now I’m wondering what are the best old railway bike paths around the world.
In Italy, from Tarvisio to approximately Venzone, a former Pontebbana railway is turned into a cycling path. Part of the Alpe Adria Radweg, very beautiful throught the Alps, with bridges and tunnels.
A local trail to me is the Silver Comet. It stretches 61 miles west from Atlanta, GA, USA, to Alabama. It was built on an old passenger rail line and is one of my personal favorites!

There’s plenty of good ones in south wales, it’s tough to cycle around the valleys but old rail alignments have much gentler slopes which makes them perfect for cycling.
My personal favourite is the Bristol to Bath cycle path, since it goes most of the way to the city centre both ways, and you also get Staple hill tunnel on the way which quite impressive

Also the Galloping trail on Vancouver Island.
Poltár – Rimavská Sobota in Slovakia. This one is replacing the railroad built in 1913. There are more such bike paths in Slovakia.
