Hi friends, I have a Surly Ogre which I'd like to add a rear rack to. It appears the most compatible racks (for frame and fenders) are the Surly Rear Rack ($160CAD) or this MEC deluxe commuter rack ($60CAD).
The vertical stays on the MEC rack lack the extra support that keeps panniers out of the rear wheel. I have full sized ortlieb rear bags, and they sit in the center of the rack when mounted. I think this might be compatible since the bags arent hanging off the end of the rack…but I know that these problems can arise in the middle of nowhere.
Has anyone successfully toured on a rack like this? Should I bite the bullet and save for the more expensive rack?

I’m a big fan of this rack, is wide and keeps my ortleibs away from my wheels, and it has the second rail lower to hang your bags lower, and further back so you have more access to strap things to the top of your rack with your backs already on. Get the Surly rack. Over tens of thousands of tour miles I’ve never had an issue with it. Other racks I’ve had tend to break under my loads.
I was going to recommend the Tubus logo evo, but it seems to be even more expensive than the surly rack. I do like the tubus logo because it allows me to strap things on the top without interfering with the panniers as they clip on below the top deck.
This one will work fine. As far as I can see on the photos it will carry at least 25-35km
