Way back in 1992, I bought my first mountain bike. I didn't know anything about bikes, but the Trek guy said it was a good one and it was marked down. It was a red Trek 990. I rode it a few years, caught the mountain biking bug, and dozens of bikes later I still ride all the time. I kept that 990 for some reason, put street tires on it and it became my cruiser. But eventually I lost interest in it, and in 2021 I sold it.
Fast forward to 2024, I discovered X bikes and vintage MTBs, and I've been looking for another red 990. I found it today, for $40!! Full XT! But the guy had one poor photo and didn't know the frame size. Sadly, I need a 20" and this is an 18", but I still snagged it. Instead of getting torn down and fully resto-modded, I'll clean it up and resell to someone shorter than me. And continue my search.

$40!? Dude you scored the goat of all 990 deals. They came with DX too so this is even upgraded. Crankset might arguably be a downgrade but still one hell of a deal.
I have a 22” frame which is the true unicorn of the 990’s that I am currently trying to part with if you’re interested?
