On day two of our long ride from Prague toward Vienna, Granden and I roll out of Tábor and head deeper into rural Czechia on our recumbent trikes. What starts as a calm ride through cobblestone streets and quiet villages quickly turns into one of those travel days.

We talk about how European infrastructure differs from the U.S., why small villages here feel so ride-friendly, and how we both ended up discovering recumbent trikes in the first place. Along the way we stop for coffee, dodge rough pavement, and enjoy some surprisingly fast downhill stretches.

Then things get weird.

Granden makes a friendly attempt to pet a horse through a fence… and accidentally discovers that it’s electric — transferring the shock to himself and the horses. No animals were harmed, but dignity definitely was.

As if that wasn’t enough, Granden also gets buzzed by an osprey from above, we roll through more postcard-perfect Czech countryside, and eventually land at a very cool hotel in Jindřichův Hradec. Dinner ends the day with Vietnamese food, great conversation, and the unfortunate discovery that gout means no beer for me for the rest of the trip.

This is real travel on the road — the beautiful, the ridiculous, and the completely unplanned.

  1. So, are you and Granden using similar gearing? I’m trying to determine whether the difference on ascents are due to differences in the trikes, or a difference in legs.

  2. I used to get gout a lot but I have learned to control it. Some of the worst pain there is. See if you can find some pure cherry juice with no sugar added and that will help get rid of it. I take a cherry supplement every day to try to control it. Great video! Does Granden have a you tube channel?
