  1. You can loosen the tension with the allen screw at the bottom. Near your index finger in the second pic.

You can also try WD40 or another lubricant on the joints and sprint.

But it’s possible you need a full replacement which honestly isn’t that hard or expensive

They are adjustable. See the small Allen/hex screw at the back of the pedal will have + – markings, turn towards the – to make it easier to clip in and out. Do that on both sides/pedals

  3. Those are the best spd cleat ever. I have pair over 20years old and work without issue. The other comments are correct about adjustment. Given the a good cleaning and should be A-OK.

I’m only on my first set of clipless, and they’re a different style (Crank Brothers Candy) so take what I say with a grain of salt.

Those pedals look *ancient*. I have never even seen pedals that look like that. You might be better off just getting a new set of more modern pedals…

Another aspect is it just takes time, practice and building muscle memory. Clipping in will get easier the more you do it. Clipping out though, that should not be difficult. I mean, remembering to do it when you should so you’re not panic unclipping is another thing, but if it’s physically difficult to do, something is wrong. You’re either doing it wrong or something is wrong with the pedals.
