Hey everyone, I’m pretty new to road cycling and wanted to get some honest opinions from people who know more than I do.

I recently picked up this Scott Speedster road bike for $100. The seller originally listed it higher, but I ended up paying $100. I’m attaching the original listing photos (before I did anything to it).

What I know so far:

• Aluminum Scott Speedster frame

• Carbon fork

• Shimano drivetrain (older generation)

• Rim brakes

• Bike had been sitting for a while and needs a tune-up

• Shifting is a bit off (stuck in smallest gear)

My goals:

• Get into road cycling for fitness / training

• Not racing, just solid rides and building endurance

• Trying to stay on a budget

Questions:

• For $100, did I get a decent deal?

• Does anything in these photos raise red flags?

• Worth putting money into a tune-up, or should I keep costs minimal?

• Roughly what would you say this bike is worth in working condition?

I’m genuinely looking to learn, so appreciate any constructive feedback. Thanks!

yeah, clean it up and check everything. all the wear parts and replace whatever is needed. looks like it needs some tlc

  2. That’s a pretty good deal, it’s worth getting a tuneup and replacing the consumables like tires, tape, and brake pads if they’re old too.

  3. $100 was a good deal. Clean it up and lube the chain and there’s no reason it shouldn’t go for miles and miles.

With a few $ it could be a lot better. Probably put new cables and brake pads, and even new tubes and tires.

  4. I wouldn’t call that a screaming deal, as it needs a bit of work, but overall its a pretty good price.

  5. As long as the carbon parts are in good shape $100 is a good deal. Hopefully the shifting issue is just a wear/maintenance issue and not damage. Good bike to learn to work on.
