Trying to scooter along while sitting on the saddle is the worst way to go. It means your only points of contact are your hands and butt, and as the bike kicks around it’s going to shove your torso (and most of your mass) in who-knows-what direction.

That’s a modern gravel bike, not a mountain bike. He was dead from the start.

As an instructor and a guide, I have one very strict rule that I will not compromise on.
If your feet aren’t on your pedals, you are off and walking next to your bike.
No waddling. I have seen so many bad accidents from people doing this half on, half off shit. Panicking in corners or steep gullys, putting their feet down, loosing traction, and then getting tangled in the bike. If you are gonna bail, you separate yourself from the bike as quickly as possible and put as much space between you and the bike as possible. Never stand inside the frame.

Know your ride, for sure! I love night rides and at the beginning, I took the dog for a walk, put my protection on and started 1-2h rides at 11 pm, alone. Felt free like a bird with my Specialized Trubo Levo Comp Alloy and the 2.400 Lumen light. Unstoppable. If I take a look back, it was so stupid and dangerous. Being alone deep in the woods and way to often to fast for my level, on unknown trails 🙈
