Hey everyone,
I’m looking for a gravel bike and could use some input.
What I’m looking for
- Budget: around €2,000 (broke student, so preferably as cheap as possible… but I’m realistic, so ~2k-ish)
- 2×12 groupset
- Shimano preference because second-hand parts are easy (and cheaper) to find
- Use: mostly (light) gravel, but also winter road bike
- Bikepacking: Netherlands → Sweden is a plan and will likely happen within 1–2 years, but I won’t bikepack super often
- Since I won’t bikepack that much and I will also be riding road, I don’t mind a more aggressive riding position
- Looks matter (judge me if you want). If I like the bike, I know I’ll ride it more.
Carbon: yeah or nay?
I’ve never owned a carbon bike and I’m a bit worried about long-term durability. I’m hoping to keep the bike, or at least the frame, for many years, ideally way beyond the lifespan of the groupset.
How “fragile” is carbon in real life over the years? Any regrets from people who switched from aluminum?
Bikes I’m considering
Canyon Grizl 7 (AL) – €1,799
https://www.canyon.com/nl-nl/gravel-fietsen/adventure/grizl/al/grizl-7/3715.html?dwvar_3715_pv_rahmenfarbe=R075_P08
Pros: solid value, practical (lots of mounts)
Cons: not in love with the color/looks
Canyon Grail CF 7 (Carbon) – €2,199
https://www.canyon.com/nl-nl/gravel-fietsen/race/grail/cf/grail-cf-7/4149.html?dwvar_4149_pv_rahmenfarbe=R119_P04
Pros: love the look, seems like it could be a fast winter road bike too
Cons: carbon durability worries
Giant Revolt 0 (AL) – €1,899–€1,999 (depending on year)
https://www.giant-bicycles.com/nl/revolt-0-2024
Pros: seems like a great deal on paper, heard lots of good things, I like the Blue Dragonfly color online
Cons: color looks less good in person (still fine). Also: how much does it actually weigh? Giant doesn’t list it on the site.
Bonus temptation – Bianchi Impulso Comp GRX 610 2×12 (Celeste) (carbon) – €2,495
https://italianbikes.nl/product/bianchi-impulso-comp-grx-610-2x12sp-2024/
This thing looks incredible, but I’m not sure it’s worth the extra money vs the options above.
Questions
- If you were in my position, what would you choose and why, any other suggestions?
- Carbon owners: how has durability been over multiple years?
- Any specific pros/cons between Grizl vs Grail vs Revolt I might be missing?
- Anyone here with experience owning the Impulso?
- Heard the tire clearance for the grail is more like 45 than 42 is this true?
Thanks!

Megamo Jakar 30 is fine stuff. Aluminum frame. GRX groupset.
Carbon is absolutely robust. The issue is the mental aspect of it. In your mind you know an AL bike can take a beating so if you use it for say commuting or shopping you’re not *that* pissed if it happens to fall while you leave it locked outwside. If you just use it for rides it really doesn’t matter.
I have a carbon canyon Grizl for 4 years now. No problems whatsoever with the carbon. Great bike for bike packing as well.
Have you heard of the polygon tambora series? To me they seem like they will fit your ride.
Cube Nuroad….. and go 1x – more bike for your money and 12 speed is enough.
You could have a cool bike. Or you could have a canyon
Giant Revolt. I own one and is the best bike I own!
