Is this trigger shifter not compatible with this derailer?

My 4yo gets shifting – for the most part. It’s awesome. However, the grip shift that came with the bike is really hard for him to reef on. I found this SRAM seven speed shifter (matches the 7 speed cassette).

The grip shift clicked into each gear well. The trigger shift seems to jump around in the middle. Not consistently up or consistently down in a way that the cable tensioner is making a significant difference.

So, does the trigger shifter not match the derailer? Or, is there a way I can make the grip shift easier to act? I’ve already lubed it up as much as I could

Could the cable pull ratios be different? Between shifters, the derailleur itself and the cassette spacing

  2. Grip shifter sucks. I got my son a new trigger shifter and derailleur and he was away. Having regular sized grips also made a big difference. It not sure how to solve the shifting other than starting from scratch and redoing the setup starting with the limit screws and tension adjuster.

  3. What is the count on the trigger shifter and is it the same as the grip/derailleur. If not this may be the case. If you are trying to unclog the old shifter maybe flush it with a solvent spray before lubing as it probably has a lot of dried up old grease/crud in there and more lube may be just clogging it further.

IME my 5 year old struggled a bit with a new high end trigger shifter so for a 4 year old nothing wrong with picking the most appropriate gear and leaving it there?

  4. Make sure the hanger is straight, I can’t tell from the angle of the pictures, but based on the state of the mech I’ll bet the hanger is bent in. Hangers can be straightened unless very badly bent, a new hanger isn’t always perfectly straight when fitted.

  5. SRAM make gripshifts in pull ratios for SRAM and and for Shimano.

The SRAM compatible ones are uncommon in low speeds.

If it’s an mrx (the most common) it’s Shimano compatible
