My Shimano SPD was squeaking like crazy, and I took it apart to lube the axle, only to find a crazy amount of play. Is this pedal a goner? It's a Shimano PD-ES600.
I’m no pedal expert, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn last night. I actually have refurbed a few pedals that had play like this. If you tighten the nut, I believe you can take the play out.

Nope, my Cats have the same play between that spacer looking part and the bearings, they’re a bit hard to put on when filled with grease though.

no, just need to open, clean up, grease, re-install and tighten back correctly. May you tube video on this.

That play is common, especially on the older shimano pedals. Back off the top nut, and preload the bearings (just enough pressure that the axle spins with relatively low effort). Then tighten the top nut again. Push fresh grease through the assembly and away you go.

thank you, everyone!

Normal, just pack with grease and snug up the bearing but not too tight or it will feel crunchy when you pedal.

The bottom threaded part always has play, it’s the top sleeve that matters. If you don’t have wrenches that fit look for ignition wrenches. They are thin enough that you can hold the adjustment nut while tightening the lock nut.
