Happens way more often while riding the bike. Is it possible my cable is kinked and causing this? I can prevent it if I flick the shifter versus just pressing down

could be the hood shifted and impeding the the lever, or maybe the bar wrap shifted too,
the fact that there is a gap in the bar wrap just under the lever is a sign that the wrap is loose and now migrating to different positions.
it could aslo just be dry cables. lube the cable and housing.
also, get some lube into the shifter, grease can dry out and create lag in the shiting action.
it would be hard to kink the cable after it’s ben installed. so unless you have recently serviced the cable and housing, it is most likely just dry components or shifter hood/tape
