The first working day of 2026 (for most of the Dutch) started a bit different than usual. The Netherlands did not have this much snow in 5 years. Still, people had to go to work and they did so as they always do: on their bicycles!

I love biking. But on monday it was minus 13 celsius. A lot of snow and ice. It was so hard to make my training. Iam weak😢.

Over 600 flights a day from Schiphol were canceled, trains and trams have come to a stand still, but you can't stop these bicycles. I'm proud!!!

Als het in Zuidwest Frankrijk een spat regent rent iedereen naar de auto. Met een krant op zijn kop. Als het sneeuwt is er niemand buiten. Fransen vinden het zielig als ik op mijn fiets door de regen fiets naar de winkel. Als ik zeg: goed voor je lijf. Zwijgen ze. Ze gaan 'fietsen' bij de fysiotherapeut. Binnen. Met de verwarming aan. Nederlanders zijn bikkels.

Ideally, it is desirable to use winter tires…. and warm gloves on cold and snow days.
Cycling will be much easier.
Waar zijn al die fatbike mietjes nu ? fagbike zou juist perfect zijn voor dit weer. Zag er maar eentje en die reed op de stoep.

Vind deze mensen wel helden. Ik heb mn vouw fietsje gepakt, voeten dicht bij de grond, maar de voorband heeft bijna geen profiel, dus die slipt makkelijk weg. deels maar gelopen, of geloop fietst.

I love the intrepid Dutch people, biking confidently in the snow and ice. If this were a typical American city, the only people moving would be a few pedestrians. The rest would be stuck in their vehicles – gridlocked. Or working remotely, from home.
Highly recommend studded tires if you live in a climate where you get a lot of snow and ice. They're a game-changer for winter cycling. I cycle 13 km each way to work, even in January, in Vermont. Also, advocate for bike paths that get plowed. That too is a game-changer.
Scandinavians also cycle during winter.
