Hello, all. I've got big plans to install a brand new groupset onto my old 90's hybrid, but if I can't get this bottom bracket out, it'll all be for nought.

The bike came with a really horrible square taper bottom bracket. The non-drive side was plastic, and the splines just broke off under the slightest load. The drive side was hardly any better, as it was steel, but skipped every other spline and the ones that were there were not solid metal, but rather hollow.

I had to heat a screwdriver glowing red and then melt the non-drive-side out bit by bit, until it was weakened enough that I was able to hammer the BB out through the plastic. This has left the remains of the fixed cup in place, without any way to remove it. My best guess so far would be to grind it really thin in one area so I can maybe pry it away from the threads and then pull the rest out, but that seems iffy and likely to damage the existing threads.

Any suggestions?

I would try a drift punch first then if that didn’t budge it, take the blade out of a hacksaw, put the blade through the opening with the teeth pointing down, reconnect it to the hacksaw and carefully saw through it. Then I’d try to get an edge of it loose, poke and pry with punches and a screwdriver. You can saw it out in sections if necessary.
