Colmar is often called the “Little Venice” of France because of its charming canals, and it’s also known as one of the best-preserved historic towns in the country. It’s especially magical during spring (with flowers in bloom) and Christmas (with legendary markets).
Top Things to Do in Colmar
1. Stroll through La Petite Venise
Enjoy the canals, bridges, and pastel houses — it’s the most photographed part of the town.
2. Take a boat ride on the canals
A short gondola-style boat ride offers unique views of the old town.
3. Visit the Unterlinden Museum
Home to medieval, Renaissance, and modern art — including the iconic Isenheim Altarpiece.
4. Explore the Old Town
Wander Rue des Marchands, admire timbered houses, and soak up the quaint atmosphere.
5. Tour the Bartholdi Museum
Learn about the creator of the Statue of Liberty in his birthplace.
6. Try Alsatian cuisine and wine
Sample tarte flambée, choucroute, and local Riesling or Gewürztraminer wines.
7. Rent a bike and explore the Alsace Wine Route
The countryside is full of picturesque villages like Eguisheim and Riquewihr nearby.
8. Visit Colmar’s Christmas Markets (if in winter)
Pure magic — multiple themed markets across town from late November to December
