Day 275. 56km (93,621kms 8yrs)

Ute had been the consummate Warm Showers host and that includes advising on the best onwards bike routes. Thanks to Ute’s knowledge I spent the day on gorgeous mostly hard top bike paths which my navigation would’ve missed. I generally have the Organic Maps app set to avoid unsealed roads; a wise choice in Libya say, but here in Germany even the unsealed bike tracks and generally very high quality.

And so I rode through quaint fackwerk villages, forests, and fields of horses and vegetables. Outside of the villages the only traffic was other cyclists.

A brief rain shower was avoided by dodging into a supermarket bakery and using their wifi for an hour. I really have been very lucky with the weather so far.

Another apparent railtrail took me the remaining kilometres into Herborn, whose old town stopped me in my tracks; several streets of freshly painted fachwerk houses and slate-tiled facades. I’d never heard of Herborn, having made no plans for visiting anywhere particular in Germany – I’m just riding a route straight through – so it was incredible to arrive somewhere so picture perfect. What’s more, I’d arranged with host Phillip to take a rest day to avoid the forecasted rain.

In fact the forecast for the following day improved enormously so I was able to spend an afternoon exploring and photographing this impossibly picturesque town. In the evening Philp was great company, introducing me also to German apple wine; a quite sour cider drink, and a local weis beer. Prost!
