I've got an older road bike and was wondering if anyone knows how you could modernize it a bit, like with a new derailleur or a handlebar conversion so the cables run inside the handlebars like on newer models.
Probably has 130mm rear hub spacing, so you can fit at most an 11-speed drivetrain.

Most of the parts are pretty good. Newer shifters would be a big upgrade. You could also change the bars to a more compact drop, and change the crankset to a compact to simplify the shifting, that derailleur should handle it fine.

i would just rewrap the bars and try to get the cables under the wrap, pref at the bottom of the bars

the actual shifters need to support in-bar or under-wrap correctly
then would be nice if the bars had a groove to put the cable in, under the wraps

I wouldn’t do anything to it.
Tiagra is good level stuff.
The cables are fine.
Just ride it.
If you get internal routes shifters it will likely cost $300-600 for the upgrade. At that point is it worth it?

Probably not.
No need to.
