It’s a very capable touring bike 100%. Not sure about your market but in my area, this is fair deal.(Atlantic Canada so CAD$)
1990s treks are great bikes. Probably a good true temper OXII or OXIII frame made in wisconsin.
I don’t think I’d pay $500 for that though. The components are mostly original and possibly run through. That stem/fake steerer thing is a dangerous abomination and to me reflects poorly on the care taken on this bike. I’d consider it effectively a frame only for $100-200 depending on the condition of the wheels (matrix rims were not great)
Good bike more for non mountainous riding.
Otherwise put a smaller gear on the crank.
Learn how to change a flat tyre and carry a pump and spare tube.
You’ll learn a lot.
I paid $500 for a 2008 trek 520. Id go for it for like 350. Even my 2008 I needed to replace most of the drivetrain to make it reliable.
A solid bike, but that’s a high price. I would expect $250 around here for that age
