I’m planning a loop from Strasbourg down to Basel and then back via the Black Forest. Planning the German side of this route is proving problematic because of concerns about cycling on main roads. There seems to be very few quiet roads connecting the towns and villages. Going off-roads isn’t an option because we will be on road bikes.

I trying to plan a route from Basel to Lake Titisee, then Lake Titisee to Freiburg.

Is it safe road cycling in the Black Forest?

  1. What tires can you bike take?

32 mm can go offroad slightly 🙂 I have done lots of light offroading on 32 on my tours before I moved to 38-40 mm.

Biggest issue if snake bite punctures.

There are many quiet roads in the Black Forest, or at least cycle paths along the main roads.

Try planning your route with komoot. All you need is the ‘komoot world package’ for a one-time fee of around EUR 20, which gives you a lifetime licence. In the planning settings, you can select various route preferences such as “quiet” or ‘scenic’.

I have entered the points you specified into Komoot. This is an example result that you can refine further.

The “quiet”’ route (little traffic) for road bikes:
