Found this with a “free” sign next to it a couple of days ago, no pedals or saddle. Went out and bought some basic pedals + haro saddle for $60 (nzd)
Chain is rusty and there is some rust on the shocks + headset / crown race. Will look to get it serviced and replace these parts.
Took it for a small ride this morning and I don’t particularly like the road bike handle bars. Would ideally look to change back to a normal mtb handle bar set up.
What sort of cost would I be looking at to convert the handle bars / gears back to a regular mtb set up with a “riser handlebar”? Cheers (apologies if my terminology is wrong)
Edit – will also look for a rigid fork to replace the rusted suspension fork. And potentially change the handle bar setup to something a bit more comfortable for casual riding / commuting.

Your saddle looks to be outside the acceptable range of the rails, make sure that the clamp is near the middle of the rails (max in each direction should be labeled).
If the drivetrain is not worn, you will need around $100 in parts (shifters, grips, bars, brake levers) to switch to a flat/riser bar setup.
Damn other than the fork it looks pretty good. Put a budget 26″ carbon fork on that and you have a nice ripper.
You might be able to swap that cockpit with someone who wants to go drop bars
