I have read that fresh/new snow on top of icy trails can render studs useless. Well, I think I proved that not five minutes into my ride on a trail literally leaving my backyard. I chose to continue on. When I got home, the damage assessment showed a couple of pretty good scrapes and a nice cut/puncture from a stick & small tree.
The places people had walked etc. were good, the other 50% of one of my normal loops was a slog.
I may opt to stick to 'groomed' trails and not rush out going forward. Too old to be hitting the ground…
Not sure how things will hold up after today’s rain and ~40 degree temps.

Correct, part blast, part slog. Going from 26 to 27.5″ was night and day for me. Coasting is actually a possibility.
The rain is already looking like it’s going to trash my trails a state over from you.
I only go out on the groomed or well-packed trails. I don’t have the energy to break trail!!
Groomed trails are the trails for me, since even then I come home covered in scrapes and bruises!
