I’m pretty new to cycling and basically all I know how to do is ride and change out/patch the inner tube. This bike has always done a bit of slipping between certain gears and when I pedal hard or stand up. Today THIS happened. As someone who is not super familiar with bike repairs, is this a relatively easy fix where I can just buy the part and swap it out or would I be better off getting a professional to do it? If I need a pro, any idea how much this repair would cost? Thanks in advance.

It’s just there for looks and to stop your pants getting dirty from your chain. Either take it off completely, or just snap off the bit that is hanging loose. It’s no big deal.

As far as the slipping between gears goes, that’s an easy fix once you know what you’re doing. Find some YouTube videos on rear derailleur adjustment and you’ll figure it out in no time.

  2. Agreed with others about not needing the chain guard (unless you ride with long pants regularly). Also, buy a good book on bicycle maintenance and repair. It’ll save you a lot of money vs. running to the bike shop every time a simple fix or tune up is needed. Doing your own repairs will also build up your self confidence!
