Another beautifully video made with compassion and sincerity and an overriding desire to engage with people in a non judgmental manner. Naomi – what a bloody shame, sliding door moments of life encapsulated by that talented challenged young girl. So wish her a turn of fortune. Thanks again Eddie, your switch from purely following the Toon, to producing earthy historical videos with a social conscience was a great move. Buy you a pint one day!
The pub on shields road is named after a pit were there was a disaster. Near the video of the dene theres an area of trees planted for the people who died
Wow it's Naomi here I can't believe how unwell I look in this video. Thanks for not judging me guys I was in a really difficult place basically fighting for survival daily. Things are getting better now actually. I didn't realise how ill I was till I seen this video now in a better mindset x
I'm Scottish, but my late mum's family was from Walker just up the road. Every summer I got to spend most of my school holidays with my gran and grandad, just 100 yards from Walker Park. This was back in the 1960s and I remember Shield's Rd as it was then well. It was a bustling magical place for me, as was the whole city. I am shocked to see it now. Long gone Black's Regal at the top of the street. I don't even see the Odeon now. Gone the wonder that was Newcastle Corporation's Trolley buses and the sounds they made. Mum would have been broken hearted to see Parrish's and Beavans's stores gone. You couldn't get mum and dad out of there back then. Dad bought his cars down a side street there and for a kid from a small Scottish town Shield's Rd and the whole city was an adventure with everything. For thiis old man the decay is hard to see, to bear. I loved it. I loved the people. For all that modern life has given, for me too much has been lost. If I feel like that, what must it be like for the local oldies, who remember it all as I do? I miss it in my heart and my soul. "Don't it always seem to go, that you don't know what you've got till it's gone…….."
I'm sorry if i've posted a hateful comment or went on about immgrants and that . I seem to remember posting it on this video but here's not the place for that and I apologise for bringing it up uneccesarily at the time the video released. I was forced into the care of abusive staff on carer visas, mostly of African or middle eastern and assaulted by them, witheld food, so i tend to have kneejerk reactions surrounding it. So to be clear i'm not a far-right or whatever, my harsh takes are based on my prrsonal experiences, I do not hate African normally, some i have met are great people But it wasn't appropriate and I apologise. it actually almost got me in trouble months later when they brought this video up on the lounge telly and looked to see if I sent a comment on it That'll teach me to think before I post and keep such rubbish to myself.

Drugs and alcohol is eating up British society. When are you going to wake up.
It is so sad that homelessness is not taken more seriously. What had happened to this country? Fantastic video, Eddy.
The High Main was, in the fifties and sixties a branch of Woolworths.

Bykers a pure shit hole haha

I was born in Hedlam Street 1957 and live in China now. That climbing wall in the church looks brilliant!
Used to be Woolworths then a wallpaper shop.
There are 2 more climbing walls. One in the old swimming pool, the other down Byker bank, called the valley.
he wants his bacon sandwich was definitely code for he's itching for crack

Unfortunately Byker is now an extremely deprived area with many of today’s issues prevalent I’ll just leave it at that🤷♂️

loved the honesty of the rapping homeless girl. yes life punishes you some people v hard when they fall.
byker really ain't that bad. seriously thinking of moving to the tyne.
I don’t think enough attention is given to what happens when people hit rock bottom and society gives you no help whatsoever.
All episodes of byker grove are now available on itvx
