I left my bike out in Valencia for one night and woke up to find my handlebars, seat, chain and rear derailleur gone, as well as my brake cables snipped. Luckily I had security skewers and a decent lock, otherwise the whole thing would be gone.

It's not the most expensive bike in the world. A 2019 base model Specialized Allez but i loved this thing. Light and nimble, it did everything I wanted it to. I've used it every day for the past 6 years.

How much will it cost to replace and rebuild it? Is it worth it or should I just look at buying a whole new one when you factor in parts and labour?

  1. Looks like your bike had claris 8 speed which is cheaper and easier to replace. The 4 piece group is $113 on eBay. Plus chain, handlebar, stem, and seat, all of which can be found used at your local marketplace. Plus labor if you’re not keen on doing it yourself

Never leave bike out overnight under any circumstance.

  2. Are there any bike co-ops in your area? You could possibly pick up enough parts to get this back on the road that way! Assuming you’re okay to do some of the labour yourself.

  3. Wow. What asshats! They stole your chain and the freakin’ brake-cables??!! This is wild!
I think you could probably get away with around 300-ish bucks, depending on your local conditions, but the parts won’t be the best (shimano sora for example).
You could also scout for better used parts and try to build it up yourself again…
But if you really love your bike, it’s worth it to invest.
Good luck and let this be a lesson to always take your bike inside over night.

  4. Unfortunately the cost will be pretty similar to replacing the whole bike. You can probably find used parts that are an upgrade and make it worth the work. If you can do it yourself or learn to do it yourself you’ll also make the investment better. Kinda stupid to strip this bike, the components were not worth the work or risk at all. My guess is whoever did it has a chip on their shoulder and was motivated more by spite than profit.

Edit: For clarity, new groupset bars and chain ≈ used 2019 Specialized Alez Sport. It’s definitely waaay cheaper to repair this than to get a brand new bike.

  5. Ballparking very entry-level (cheap) components, you’re probably looking at a minimum of around $350 in parts plus labor. Easily 450-500 plus labor for better quality parts. Maybe look at Microshift Advent or Sword instead of Shimano. May well be better off going with a complete new bike after labor costs included, depending on where you are. Take it to a local shop and get a quote.

  6. So sad to hear this happened to you in valencia, do you keep it usually in the same spot, they must have spent at least some time disassembling the bike without supervision, and they even took the chain. If you buy used and/or Ali express and build it yourself, then it will probably be less than 150-200€ for the parts (handlebars, shifters, seat and seat tube, chain, cables and cable hoses, bar tape) of course they would be probably lower grade than the originals, but would definitely do the job for getting around in valencia, work in valencia is also not expensive, I guess che bici or good Bike would quote you 70-100€, but they might have a long wait line. Also you could ask in critical mass circles, maybe someone knowledgeable would do it for a 50€ plus two 12 packs of nicer beer 😁

Anyone locking up a bike in cities and high theft areas crazy glue bearings in the heads of the bolts for the stem and seat post. Acetone or a small torch will get them out if you need to work on it but otherwise they can’t get them out on the street most of the time.

You could look on marketplace for a basket case or a bike off a indoor trainer that’s had it’s time, ransack the part’s you need and rebuild it , you will only love it more once built, it’s a shame someone has done this but it’s only nuts and bolts everything is reparable

  9. I’m a co-op volunteer. This is about $100 parts and labor with ‘guided service’ meaning you pitch in and help. Look at this as a chance to personalize your bike!

Ok, first, my condolences, I mean getting ripped like that sets sinking things to stomach.

Second, I just payed month ago Tiagra whole groupset about 350, and dropbar was another 50. But, you didn’t have good groupset, by looks was, my take, sorry if wrong, Shimano Turney. That is lowest of all. Any of Sora, Claris, 105, Tiagra, any is waayy better.

You can do it yourself, with decant bicycle tool set. Like, 30e does the job.
