Picked up a nasty screw. It scratched up the inside of my wheel pretty good. Am I cooked? Or can I just put some tape over the rough area? Note that I run TPU tubes (not tubless) – I’m tried that those rough spots will puncture the tube from the inside.

Lowkey ill slap some guerrila tape on that and call it a day. I think it should do the trick
If it hasn’t actually gone through the rim I’d put extra tape over the damage and see how it feels on the bike, even if the wheel isn’t outright dead it may feel “off” from whatever structural damage could have been done. If you can afford a new wheel you’d do well to get one at this point anyway and maybe keep this one as a backup for short/gentle rides if it still feels ok.
New wheel day!
Edit, looking again it’s the tape that’s more tore up. I would take off the tape and see how deep that really is. Might be salvageable. LBS could give a pro opinion of course.
I would probably replace, however this is a puncture and you could plug it or patch it from the inside and it should hold fine.
If the portion hit by the screw is aluminum youre beyond fine. Just throw another layer of tape on there if youre lazy .. although that would not be aero.
If its carbon? I have no idea probably get it Xrayed and still never know if its safe. Carbon damage is always a Lil gamble
Time to utilize that roval warranty
Yeah its.its.under warranty, for a a couple extra bucks they may cover it with replacement. That said. You are likely fine if the nail didnt go through the sidewalk or base of the rim. You can retape, light sanding to remove any burns, and you’ll likely be fine.
People are very quick to replace items but its totally usable as long as the structure is sound.
Live personally fixed 100’s of wheels like this and hav le ridden my own wheels that have caught a screw as such
Peel the tape and look at the carbon
Wow, direct hit !
Peel the tape off, it needs to be replaced anyway. Then you’ll know
How did that get there?
