We’ve all heard about the famous Christmas markets in Dresden, Cologne and Düsseldorf, but there’s another Christmas market in Germany that is worth visiting. Freiburg im Breisgau is a city in the South of Germany and hosts a great Christmas market. They have multiple markets across the city and they are hard to miss while you arrive at the city by train.
▪️Rest of the Year
Freiburg is beautiful during Christmas, but this small city is also a great destination during the rest of the year. The cathedral in Freiburg is stunning and the Martinstor also is worth a visit. The city isn’t very big, which makes it perfect for a day trip.

I took a day trip to Freiburg during my stay in Basel. From Basel you have 2 options by train. The regional train, that takes about an hour and the Intercity, which only takes about 40 minutes. The regional train is obviously a bit less expensive. I paid 39€ for 2 return tickets from Basel SBB to Freiburg (Breisgau) Hbf. By foot it takes about 15 minutes to get from the train station to the cathedral.
