Hi! I'm a cheap-ass with a bad habit of frequently browsing fb marketplace. As a result I've bought several bikes, but they have pretty much ALL been very cheap (~$60) and old, from the 80's. I'm not a super-competitive cyclist, but in the summer would occasionally do group paceline rides with a local shop. I always rode in the D-group, so I'm not setting land speed records or anything, but we would maintain a 20mph-ish paceline for 20-30 miles. I've done occasional longer rides, 40-60 miles, but nothing crazy. Usually this is on an old 80's lugged steel bike with downtube shifters.

I've just seen a 2018 Giant TCR advanced for sale near me, without wheels, listed for $300. It appears to be in pretty good shape, with a Shimano 105 groupset. The owner is also selling an apparently never used pair of Superteam carbon wheels for $300. So, I'm not actively looking for abother bicycle, I have more than I have room for, buuuuut this kind of seems like a pretty good deal, and maybe a good way to try a modern carbon bicycle on the cheap?

I'm very knowledgeable about vintage bike worth, but not so much with the newer stuff. Thoughts on this? Thanks.

  1. Seems nice. I was looking at the Lakewood listings for a bike to have at home when I visit my parents and was thinking about this, but I’d never be able to make the size work.

I feel like this is a pretty solid way to up your cycling game.

  2. Generally I’d say you might be best buying a cheaper modern bike with disc brakes. But I have to be honest this bike looks like it might be “new old stock”. It looks like it was literally just taken out of the box. For $300 you have a nice frame and a seemingly brand new decent Shimano 11 speed drive train. That’s a very fair deal.

As for the wheels, you can get the same ones new for only about $60 more on Amazon, I’d do that. Get a set of tires and some TPU tubes and you have a pretty nice set-up for $800.

I rarely say pull the trigger on rim brake bikes, but as if I was never going to say do it this would be the one. Just do some research into the frame and make sure to give it a solid inspection when you go to get it.

    Good luck!!!

  3. Tell him $500 for it all and you’re set. Get some good tubes and tires and it’ll be a fun setup.
