You could get a full CUES group set for peanuts which would probably cost less than the maintenance and time on those two

Id focus more on the shifter, I have an xtr derailleur from that generation on a less old 9 spd xt shifter and it’s a solid set up. I also wouldn’t assume the modern entry level beats the old school MTB 9 speed
