HUGE thanks to the Lauf crew for meeting and riding with us! I’ve been to Iceland once before, back in 2017, and we made a big shreddit style video from that trip. These days, I don’t do shredits, as I much prefer to attempt to tell stories with my videos. This is a bit of a story about why the Elja is what it is- and why I am not rallying it here on my home turf. It’s simply built to do different things than what we do around here- and that’s ok!

The single pivot design of the Elja pedals pretty darn well. It felt fine on the descents. And it handles a lot more stoutly than it feels in the parking lot! But there is some serious irony with this bike. While it begins as a simple design, it then puts on so much extra tech that perhaps it’s not such a simple bike after all… The model I rode used a SRAM battery operated suspension system that tied into a power meter in the crank. The suspension firms when it’s time to pedal. Then, the bike uses the E*Thirteen Sidekick rear hub, which should help minimize any pedal kickback- which high single pivots are notorious for having. And finally, the SID rear shock is crammed full of volume reducers- and it actually felt pretty good. It’s a very interesting take on what it means to be a true all-around mountain bike, and I find it a breath of fresh air.
