Bottom is the old BB-RS500, 68mm shell width on the frame with Tiagra cranks. LBS gave me the top one and said it would work, just that the threads go in deeper. But after putting them side by side, I’m not really sure what that means, or how its supposed to work. And since have checked the shimano compaitiblity page (still learning) and see:

    – BB-R9100

    – SM-BBR60

    – SM-BB6700

    – SM-BB5700

    – BB-RS501

    – BB-RS500

which this does not fall under. Would like to not make a fool of myself so appreciate the help 😅

  2. BB-RS500 is for road 68mm bottom brackets and matching road crank spindle lengths

BB-MT501 is for mtb 68 or 73mm bottom brackets and matching mtb crank spindle lengths

  3. Yes, the BB-MT501 is appropriate for both 68 and 73mm BB shells, you just need to use the appropriate spacers. If they have a RS501, that will more likely be a better option.

  4. It’s a mtb bottom bracket and seems to have the 73mm(?) spacer. Use the narrower spacer from your 68mm(?) bb and it’ll work fine – just make sure the cups themselves are the same width. The MT501 may be a hair wider, but damned if I know.

An RS501 would be ideal, but you do what you have to in a pinch.

  5. It’s been hammered home, but Road was always 68 and MTB was 68/73. Road is usually more refined. I can safely say Ive made that mistake before.

  6. It is *possible* to use that MTB bottom bracket with your road crankset. It’s just not ideal. You’d need to use your road “tube”, the plastic spindle protector in the middle from your old bottom bracket, and you’d need to use 1mm spacers (which you don’t have) on either side of the bottom bracket to make up for the slight difference in cup (the aluminum part with the bearings in it) widths.

Possible, but silly in your case. Just tell the bike shop to either give you the correct BB or accept a return. And don’t let them upsell you either. Even the Ultegra-level BBR60 should be ~$30 and the 501 should be under $30 ($29) in a local shop.

One is a road bottom bracket, the other is a mountain bottom bracket. No, you cannot use one for the other.
